Core User Experience
As technology grows and evolves, the way audience consumes content and the devices they consume them on change. According to Babich, each device has a core user experience, meaning it solves a problem and provides value (2017). Understanding the audience and their core user experience aids in creating suitable content for new media platforms. The main devices include smart watches, mobile phones, tablets, computers, and TVs. Different types of devices provide different services for different reasons (Babich, 2017).
There are strategies for communicators that can be used when making content appropriate for different devices. This includes designing content based on the smallest screen size first. That's because this “forces you to decide what matters most” (Babich, 2017).
Consistency is important when ensuring a seamless experience for users, so the content should follow the brand’s image no matter what device it is on. That being said, it’s better to “not just scale your design up so it fits on those large screens. Take full advantage of the extra space you have available to you” (Babich, 2017). Content on smaller devices should be condensed, with short headlines and bullet points.
As the screen size grows, more content can be added: on mobile phone applications, for example, the information should be scrollable and may be presented with detailed bullet points or paragraphs, while on desktops could have different sections with a mix of bullet points, paragraphs, chat links, and other features.
